  • Broadwater Photos from the Archives of the Museum of Nothern Arizona, Flagstaff

Joseph L. Ferrell was an engineer from Pennsylvania who did track design for the railroad when it was being built on the Eastern Shore in 1884. Ferrell and his wife, Elise, bought extensive tracts of land on Hog Island in the late 1880s and created a company, Broadwater Land and Improvement Co., to sell lots and build a clubhouse.

The Ferrells promoted their land as Broadwater Island, and they built a cottage and had others built for friends and clients. They moved to the island with their young daughter, Mary-Russell, who spent much of her childhood there.
