School Field Trips

The BIC offers a few different field trip programs for students, including groups that may not be able to travel to Machipongo to visit us. Read more about our programs below and contact our Director of Education, Traci Jones, to learn more or schedule a field trip!

My First Field Trip

BIC introduced My First Field Trip as a pilot program in 2011, and it has grown to include over 400 children yearly. This program is made possible with generous support from the Batten Educational Achievement Fund and PNC Foundation.

This successful multi-faceted program is designed to help the preschool-aged population of Northampton and Accomack Counties understand and interpret the culture and heritage of the Eastern Shore and her Barrier Islands through art, music, local history, and manners. Children come once a month for a semester, so each child visits four times. In addition, the program is offered to Northampton and Accomack County Migrant Summer School students each year.

BIC is excited to expand this program to 4th-grade students. The Barrier Islands Center hold the firm belief that offering top-shelf art, music, local history, and manners - all on a pretty farm, will help our young children develop confidence and a feeling of connection to this community.

We are thrilled My First Field Trip has taken root. We have high hopes that the program – and the children who participate - will continue to thrive for years to come.

BIC on the Road

Can't bring your group to Machipongo? The BIC can come to your school, civic organization, library, or other location. Programs can include a children's book reading, documentary film screening, historical lectures, and more.
