All materials are included, but students may bring a photo to use as a painting reference.

Instead of an ordinary flower vase, you'll paint a whimsical vase with “attitude.” The handles become arms with hands on hips, giving it a playful, confident personality without using a face or other human features. Then, bring it to life with a colorful bouquet of expressive flowers bursting with movement and charm.

 No drawing experience is necessary. Step-by-step instructions make this class perfect for beginners while still allowing plenty of room for creativity. Every student will leave with a one-of-a-kind painting that is colorful, whimsical, and guaranteed to make people smile. All supplies are provided, but you're welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Shipwrights, Seamen, & Sailing Masters: The Maritime Trades on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, 1770-1820

 This lecture will cover the various trades that revolved around the maritime world from shipbuilding, to navigating, to sailing.  It will include a variety of historical artifacts that were used from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century.  The lecture will discuss the transition of the shipbuilding and shipping trade through the American Revolution and the War of 1812 using a variety of hands-on activities.  In the end, the audience will gain a better understanding of how the Chesapeake's economy during two wars led to dynamic changes in the way people exchanged goods and ideas. From the Dugout Canoe to the Carolina Skiff: The Evolution of Chesapeake Bay Workboats
Speaker: Dr. Paul Ewell

This presentation chronicles the workboats of the Chesapeake Bay from the early days of the log canoe through the era of modern fiberglass boats used by working watermen. Vessels featured include the pungy, pilot schooner, bugeye, skipjack, scow, buyboat, deadrise, and others. The presentation includes many photos depicting each type of boat and the fisheries in which it worked.

 Dr. Paul L. Ewell is a professor at Regent University with approximately 30 years of experience in higher education and academic leadership. His teaching and research interests include supply chain management, logistics, operations analytics, artificial intelligence in higher education, experiential learning, and the integration of Christian faith with business education. He is the creator of the Passion Model of teaching and the BOUDICA Framework for applying artificial intelligence to research, analysis, decision-making, and implementation. Dr. Ewell also has extensive industry experience in maritime operations, manufacturing, transportation, and risk management, as well as a longstanding commitment to maritime history and heritage.  He is also a founder and the executive director of the Eastern Shore Maritime Museum.

Learn how to make fig jam and delicious fig chutney in class from frozen figs put away from the summer harvest! Each student will make their own batch of simple fig jam in class, get recipes for some other fig goodies that can be made in the winter and summer, and take their batch of jam home to enjoy. Will provide frozen figs for students; feel free to bring your own frozen figs (2-3lbs) if you have some!
