Shipwrights, Seamen, & Sailing Masters: The Maritime Trades on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, 1770-1820

 This lecture will cover the various trades that revolved around the maritime world from shipbuilding, to navigating, to sailing.  It will include a variety of historical artifacts that were used from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century.  The lecture will discuss the transition of the shipbuilding and shipping trade through the American Revolution and the War of 1812 using a variety of hands-on activities.  In the end, the audience will gain a better understanding of how the Chesapeake's economy during two wars led to dynamic changes in the way people exchanged goods and ideas.
