For generations it was called "Downing's Wharf" and was the seat of the Downing family of Northampton County. In 1853, Edward L. Willis acquired the property and began running a general store. Access to a deep and wide channel out to the ocean made this place an attractive center for shipping and commerce. By 1900, it was called Willis Wharf and was a busy town and a gateway to Hog Island. Come and hear about the history of this town and the families that helped it to grow.
