THE VIRGINIA NAVY'S DEFENSE OF THE EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA, 1776-1781.

This lecture will cover the men, ships, politics, and logistics of the Virginia Navy and the battles fought in the Chesapeake Bay and on the Atlantic Ocean to protect the Old Dominion’s maritime frontier.

Matthew grew up on the Eastern Shore and graduated from Nandua High School in 2000. He has a bachelor's and a master's in history from Virginia Tech.  He has studied Virginia, maritime, and military history for the past 25 years and has worked and volunteered at several museums and historic sites throughout the state.  Matt has reenacted several time periods in Virginia history, including the War of 1812 and the Civil War. He currently leads a historical reenactment group that portrays the Virginia Navy during the American War of Independence.  He lives in Portsmouth, Virginia, with his family, as well as two ducks and a chicken.
