From the Dugout Canoe to the Carolina Skiff: The Evolution of Chesapeake Bay Workboats

This presentation chronicles the workboats of the Chesapeake Bay from the early days of the log canoe through the era of modern fiberglass boats used by working watermen. Vessels featured include the pungy, pilot schooner, bugeye, skipjack, scow, buyboat, deadrise, and others. The presentation includes many photos depicting each type of boat and the fisheries in which it worked.

 Dr. Paul L. Ewell is a professor at Regent University with approximately 30 years of experience in higher education and academic leadership. His teaching and research interests include supply chain management, logistics, operations analytics, artificial intelligence in higher education, experiential learning, and the integration of Christian faith with business education. He is the creator of the Passion Model of teaching and the BOUDICA Framework for applying artificial intelligence to research, analysis, decision-making, and implementation. Dr. Ewell also has extensive industry experience in maritime operations, manufacturing, transportation, and risk management, as well as a longstanding commitment to maritime history and heritage.  He is also a founder and the executive director of the Eastern Shore Maritime Museum.
